Conscious Sedation in Dentistry
Conscious Sedation in Dentistry
What is Conscious Sedation?
Conscious sedation is a medical procedure used in dentistry that has the purpose to relax the patient and create insensitivity to pain.
Conscious sedation is usually performed to calm excessively anxious people before dental treatment or to prepare patients who need more permanent care.
Procedure for Conscious Sedation
Conscious sedation in dentistry can be performed through various medical procedures, based on the duration of dental therapy and the patient’s clinical history.
For this reason, conscious sedation is part of a specific therapeutic procedure:
Patient history – The medical staff of our office collects information on the patient, defining their clinical history and highlighting problems on which to pay attention.
Pharmacological Therapy – With reference to the dental therapy to be performed, the referring doctor
prescribes the pharmacological plan that the patient has to follow in preparation for treatment.
Operation and Sedation – During the operation, the patient receives conscious sedation, experiencing the therapy with extreme relaxation and tranquillity.
Post-operative – After the operation, the doctor prescribes drugs to facilitate the clinical course.
Conscious Sedation with Nitrous Oxide at Di Gioia Dental Practice
Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide is the most common sedation procedure in dentistry: in our practice we use the Master Flux Plus system which administers oxygen and nitrous oxide in a controlled way, inducing a sense of relaxation and reducing the perception of pain.
The patient remains conscious during the operation, without losing protective reflexes and decision-making skills. However, the emotional charge resulting from the therapy is reduced in favor of a general feeling of well-being.
