What is Dental Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a dental aesthetic technique that serves to lighten the color of the teeth making them whiter.

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dentistry treatments, which is necessary when the teeth turn yellow causing aesthetic discomfort.

What causes tooth staining?

The color of the teeth is determined by personal characteristics (intrinsic factors) and by the personal habits (extrinsic factors):

Intrinsic Factors – The color of the teeth is influenced by genetic characteristics, the age of the patient, his systemic and dental health status, the dental interventions he has previously requested.

Extrinsic Factors – The color of the teeth is influenced by the personal food choices, propensity to smoke, attention to oral hygiene, the use of drugs.

It is important to define the main causes that leads to a specific dental color in order to adopt the most correct whitening techniques.

Teeth Whitening Methods

Before the whitening treatment, the dentist examines the patient, collecting
information on his health and dental history, observing the tissues and the conditions of previous restorations.

Depending on the patient’s needs, the teeth can be made whiter using:

Mechanical Whitening Techniques – Techniques that act on the outside of the tooth, removing stains and blemishes, in favor of a whiter and shiny tooth. The action of these techniques is very rapid.

Chemical Whitening Techniques – Techniques that act on the internal tissues of the tooth, intervening on the substances that yellow the teeth internally. The action of these techniques is less rapid and the results are observed after a few appointments.
